Herrick Health Library reopens with new additions for families

LA MESA, CA (July 2021) – After sixteen months of closed doors, the Herrick Health Library recently announced its reopening with an expansion to the Children’s department and a return to in-person programming.

The updated space reflects the increasing demand for fun and interactive family spaces. With the goal to turn children into lifelong learners, the space has been redesigned to integrate activities and books focused on mental and physical health in a cohesive way. For additional accessibility, titles in Spanish were added to the collection, ensuring inclusivity.

Research shows that what children learn in their first few years of life can have lasting effects on their future success and health. The library’s additions design the experience to make learning child-directed and a collaboration for families.

Coming soon is also a gratitude tree, a mural for children to focus on empowerment and a caring community.

While meeting spaces are still closed, small study rooms are available, and computers are open for public use. Curbside pickup is still available for those wanting to make their library visit quick, as well as e-books, audiobooks, digital magazines, and streaming videos for residents not in close proximity to the library.

“We are so excited to open our doors to the public again,” said Rachelle Kierulff, Library Director. “We want to ensure that no matter where you live in the District, you feel like reliable health information is attainable, and that the library is engaging and inspiring to anyone who walks in the door. This month, we’re also hosting our first in-person Wellness Wednesday Health Talk on Preventing Falls on July 28th at 10:00AM in the auditorium.”

The reopening hours for the library are Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9AM-3PM; Tuesday, Thursday 1PM-7PM; Saturday 9AM-1PM. A bus station for those using the transit system is a quick walk from the library, as well as the orange line for those using the light rail.
