Meet & Greet the Artist: Mary Manusos
Mary Manusos grew up in San Diego, studied fine arts at SDSU, and went on to the University of Wisconsin, receiving an MFA in Printmaking. She then began teaching Printmaking and Papermaking at Ohio University. Through her efforts, the Printmaking department became one of the top five in the country. She also helped to establish a visiting artist program, collaborating on print projects with many internationally recognized artists. She has held numerous workshops throughout the US and abroad, and her travels to Latin America greatly influenced her art. “I have always utilized photography and translating those images in various print processes, primarily etching and woodcuts, and most recently digital prints. Most of my work involves the layering of images, one medium over another. It began with printing ink, etching, or woodblocks, over aqueous images made with colored handmade paper. More recently I’ve experimented with printing multiple photographic images on top of one another on a large Epson printer. My works are inspired by my encounters with nature and colonial architecture from my travels in the Americas. In response to 9/11, I started a series of black and white flower pieces. I continue to work with flowers and desert flora. The pallet of colors I use are intended to impart my feelings and observations of the places I am emerged in while photographing.
