On October 13th, 2023 – the District held yet another lively event inviting professionals from community-based organizations across East County, as well as members of the public to explore and celebrate October’s theme of health literacy.
Health literacy involves two parts: 1) providers communicating information clearly and 2) patients ensuring they are understanding.
During the morning portion of the day, guest speakers from the County of San Diego Health & Human Services, San Diego State University, and San Diego County Library presented during the “Paging Dr. Google” training, on health literacy topics from a provider perspective, offering tools or ideas organizations in East County can employ to better reach their audiences.
Author of the book Health Literacy from A to Z: Practical Ways to Communicate Your Health Message, and founder of the worldwide initiative, Health Literacy Month, Helen Osborne, M.Ed, OTR/L also joined Grossmont Healthcare District’s Chief Community Health Officer, Amy Abrams, for a recorded conversation on health literacy 101 as part of the training. Additionally, participating partners in attendance received a free copy of her book.
In the afternoon, 23 organizations tabled in the District courtyard for the East County Health & Community Resource Fair, distributing marketing materials and valuable information about their services to the public. Community members who stopped by learned how to access reliable health information through Grossmont Healthcare District’s Health & Wellness Library, connected with local providers, and were entered to win one of four health-focused prizes during our raffle.
Thank you to those who attended our training and participated in our resource fair! Please view the pictures below from the event.
