Wellness Wednesday: Oral Health and its Implications for Overall Health from Pregnancy to Geriatrics

This presentation will discuss the importance of oral health and its implications on overall health including pregnancy outcomes, children’s development, heart disease, diabetes, and dementia.  The presentation will review how cavities and gum disease develop and ways to prevent these two common oral diseases.

Speaker: Dr. Whyte is the Chief Dental Officer for County of San Diego Health and Human Services. Having a full time Chief Dental Officer is a new role for the County and it demonstrates the County’s commitment to improving oral health throughout the lifespan for all San Diegans. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of Pittsburgh and her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at the University of Pennsylvania. She went on to complete her pediatric dental residency at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY and stayed in the New York City metropolitan area practicing in a private practice until moving to San Diego in 2013 where she began working at a community health center. She then went on to complete her Master of Public Health degree at A.T. Still University with a dental emphasis. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She is an advisory board member for the Anderson Center for Oral Health. She is also on faculty with the NYU Langone Health Pediatric Dental Residency Program affiliated with San Ysidro Health and on medical staff with Rady Children’s Hospital. She has authored numerous publications including an article on COVID-19 and its impact on dental utilization in a pediatric emergency room and urgent care setting and her most recent publication on harm reduction in the dental profession. Her work interests include medical-dental integration, research, and increasing access to care to our most vulnerable populations.
